Get Rid of Procrastination

What is procrastination? Many have defined this rather ubiquitous human habit as the art of putting things off until later. Unfortunately, all of us have a tendency to procrastinate from time to time; some more than others. While this sometimes can prove a wise decision (for example, delaying an examination until we know that we a are absolutely ready), this trait will more frequently result in a loss of time, energy and perhaps worst of all, procrastination can hinder our accomplishments. So, the next question will naturally revolve around ways to mitigate its impact or more effectively, methods that can help us stop procrastination entirely. Is this a reality or merely the stuff of fantasy?

Is There a Problem?

Procrastinating is a habit that we become accustomed to over time. Why do something today that can be put off until tomorrow? The simple fact of the matter is that the hardest habits to break are those which can often go by undetected. Procrastinating falls into this very same category. It is therefore first necessary to recognize that we are inclined to procrastinate. Should we find that this personality trait exists, we can begin to construct ways to slowly do away with it. This can be thought of as treating a disease; it must first be discovered before we are able to begin determining ways to cure it.

Baby Steps

When attempting to break a habit, many will make the mistake that the process will occur overnight. These are the very same individuals that are frequently let down by a lack of results, become frustrated and give up. It should be understood that the process of procrastination has been engrained into our psyche for years. Thus, eliminating it in a few days or weeks will simply not happen. However, it is possible to stop procrastination by setting achievable milestones and keeping track of progress. Examples of these goals can be:
Instead of hitting the “snooze” button on the alarm, waking up on time.
Finishing a work project ahead of schedule.
Seeking out self-motivated individuals.

The main idea should not be to eliminate the habit at once, but rather to establish an environment and mental approach that is conducive to change over time.

Patience is a Virtue

Above all, a great deal of patience will be required. Old habits die hard and this mindset is no different. It is essential to remember it may very well take months or even years to stop procrastination completely. Setting up realistic milestones and not chiding ourselves for occasionally failing are two of the most important approaches that can be taken.

So, what is procrastination?  It is a shortcoming, a sign of weakness or simply a bad habit? On the contrary, it is simply a human trait that everyone possesses to an extent. With a bit of time, patience and knowledge, it can be eliminated and we can begin to lead vibrant and more fulfilling lives.
