You go about your way, trying to make your dreams happen, when suddenly you find yourself recalling past mistakes and failures that end up pulling you down. Just when you thought you are completely over that grim part of your life, nasty issues from years back would find their way to slap you in the face and make you feel worthless. When this happens, rising back from your fall and going onward may seem like the toughest thing to do.

However, you are well aware of the fact that you should never allow self-doubt to get the best of you. No matter how difficult life may be, you know that there is always a way out of all tribulations and challenges. While these are all quite comforting to think about, the last thing on your mind would be to stay strong and focused on achieving your goals once you begin doubting yourself again.

Tracing Your Past

As we grow up and try to learn more about the world, we come across situations that may bring us to a state of frustration and disappointment. It gets even worse when the people you love the most pull you down instead of support you. Then, you harbor these negative emotions and start to experience self-doubt and lack of confidence the next time you see yourself attempting to make your dreams happen.

Everyone has gone through tough experiences in life. Sure, your childhood or most recent past might have been the worst, but that should not stop you from living the present and being the best you can possibly be. After all, there is no such thing as a perfect and problem-free life. As long as you are alive, there will always be times when disappointments will come your way. Yet, success and good fortune also await you as soon as you overcome life’s hurdles.

Your childhood might be far from what’s “ideal”, but so what? You are not a child anymore. You are all grown up, and those challenges of the past have shaped and molded you into a stronger person you are at the moment. By reflecting on where things have gone wrong and learning from your mistakes, you can take on life’s little surprises with poise, grace and wisdom – and no negative memory or emotion can stop you from becoming successful.

Eliminating Self-Doubt

self doubtNow that you are aware of how self-doubt creeps up to you and makes you lose the strength to carry on, it may help to understand some ways on how to manage this negative thought when it comes your way. So, here are some tips that can inspire you to believe in yourself and manage self-doubt.

  1. Be aware of feelings of doubt.

The only way to address a problem is to identify it. Hence, you can only eliminate self-doubt once you aware of its existence. In most cases, you begin to doubt yourself when you are faced with a major project that needs to be accomplished, or when you are going on a job interview and you need to highlight your positive points.

If you catch yourself thinking or saying phrases in your head that are too negative, this is the time to recognize what transpires in your self-talk and redirect your focus. Tell yourself, “I may be a newbie, but I’m working hard to do better each day and I believe I can handle the job”. You may also begin wondering what would happen if you fail. Then, just remind yourself that if ever you make mistakes and fail, you could always try again and do things better next time – and really try to make this happen.

  1. Surround yourself with positive people and environment.

It is so difficult to stay optimistic when the people you are with just keep on pulling you down. You may have already redirected your focus and improved your way of thinking, yet when you are always surrounded by skeptical people, staying positive can be too challenging to do.

The best thing you can do is to distance yourself from those who have nothing good to say but words of disappointment and doubt. Eleanor Roosevelt once said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”, and you better believe it because it’s true – you are capable of anything unless you let others crush your spirit.

With this in mind, it helps to immerse yourself with positive vibrations wherever you are. Take a walk at the park, read an inspirational book, have a conversation with supportive and optimistic people, or listen to soothing music that brings messages of peace. Strengthen your mind and body, so you can have a strong barrier against people who may try to steal your energy. Keep in mind that you always have a choice in life, and no one should make that choice on your behalf.

  1. Think about past successes.

There is nothing more comforting than recalling your past achievements instead of dwelling on your failures. You may think of yourself as some kind of a failure now, but you must have done amazing things in the past that gave you a chance to shine, right? Whether it was a promotion at your past job, or a word of praise from your colleagues, these are all inspiring things that are worth recalling.

Once you have identified these positive events in your life, then it will be easier for you to move toward your present goals. If you had your chance to be recognized, praised and appreciated, you can certainly make these instances happen again. It is only a matter of believing you can succeed because you have already tasted victory several times in the past. Now, it is even more possible with that stronger spirit you possess.

  1. Go back to your dreams in life.

Perhaps you have already lost the interest to keep on dreaming or make things happen because you end up failing anyway. In fact, you might have even forgotten about that list of goals you have made because of tough instances in your life. Well, now is the time to revisit your bucket list and start putting check marks on each item one moment at a time.

Think of your list as a map that leads you to a sense of fulfillment in life. After all, how can you gauge how far you have traveled in life when you are not even sure what you have accomplished, so far? Besides, once you have a renewed sense of confidence and belief in yourself, nothing can stand in your way of achieving your goals.

With all these things in mind, start banishing self-doubt and begin trusting yourself. You are capable of succeeding, so begin making things happen!
